This is not an attempt at a flame war, but why would anyone vote based on race or gender?

I know things were not fair for certain people in the past but two wrongs don't make a right and voting based on race and gender is racist and sexist, don't ya think? If not, I can't wait to be a minority, it sounds like fun.

I am trying to stay out of the political rants and every time I try to reason with someone with an opposing opinion and even try to agree on common ground, they blast me with completely one sided tirades again and again. So I learned not to feed into it.

The only thing that concerns me about this election is a statistic I found the other day:

By a wide 26-point margin McCain outperforms Obama as having the right experience to be president. This fails to help McCain as less than one in five voters says this is their top priority.

Then what the hell is the point? That is all I have to say, vote for whomever you like, it's your right. Just do it for the right reason- the benefit of the united states of america and it's people.

I am pretty sure, unless I am mistaken that I did not start the first political thread, the ones that did stopped posting long ago, maybe they revel in watching the carnage and nastiness unfold, who knows?

All I heard was constant conspiracy theories and accusations of lies and hatred from "my side" (uhhh, they ain't my people- I'm a lesser of two evils libertarian dude) but people that call bush and cheney nazi's, compare mcain to wallace (a racist democrat) and call for the murder of the joe blow the laborer go scot free in their eyes. Is that not unfair? Is that not bigotry?

It's sad that some people are so blinded by their emotions and beliefs they won't even aknowledge another living human beings honest opinion (or actual factual statements for that matter). I can admit the faults of bush and never hopped on the clintion bashing boat and have learned anyone who cannot admit they are wrong about things usually are. Clinton was not all that bad for the country, carter was a disaster on the other hand and it's hard to dispute that fact regardless of your affiliation.

Lastly, the grateful dead brought this on themselves endorsing a candidate... but it should be no surprise to anyone that a band born out of the anti war, communal living, free love movement would endorse the most liberal senator in congress for president. I think some are voting just to protest bush, which is sad. I wonder if olberman and all the others of his ilk will be so super critical of the big o for the next 4 years if he wins. It would be interesting to see what the hypocrites would do when a human makes mistakes as he is bound to due by the laws of nature... unless he repeals them.

Hopefully this will be over in 9 hours, but I doubt it. It has been the most stressful experience of my life, give me a funeral, a bad acid trip or my electric being cut off anyday over this anxiety...

I won't respond to any attacks or false statements or rhetoric going forward. Sorry if I disturbed the funkshway in here but I could not let people say things over and over that were opinion or fiction wihout saying anything, it must be a genetic thing because I never have let people bully or silence me... and that's a good thing. I don't like to resort to initiating attacks or insults either and from now on, I won't even stoop to that level... what I should have done the whole time is follow my own musical advice:

Now go out and vote for mckinney, she needs us to carry the flame of being against the most green form of energy known and that is stopping change no one will believe in.

Oh I hear you--that was to simply suggest that if you don't like ANYONE, voting for those without a chance (used to be women/minorities, probably not true now) was a possible means by which you throw a small (very small) stone at the established groups.

By all means, lets hope you can ALWAYS vote for someone you truly want, in which gender, creed, color, etc., never entered into it.

But, I have at times, voted for all women running for judges eg, when I had no idea who they were, BUT knew I disliked ALL the incumbent male judges.

That was all I was getting at.

"Concern trolls" typically talk like this.

Yes, what IS the point?

We all know that reality has a liberal bias!

It's not so much liberal as common sense. I've never known biker Deadheads, who weren't a large percentage anyway, and it seems almost all the Deadheads I met you might call hippie in general, with a large group actually having been there.

Maybe it's just the Bay Area, but it makes perfect sense to me to group around someone like Obama that's can talk the talk while being fresh enough to have avoided heavy compromises. I'm glad he has associated with Rev Wright and Professor Khalidi, and I'm mature enough top know that he's heading a national coalition to bring this country back from the brink of fascism.

Obama would be the leader of many tribes who have to work together. So, paraphrasing Dylan, please get out of the way if you can't lend your hand - for the times they are a-changin'.

Hopefully.

Actually, SF, I hate to say it, but it was me that voiced that (voting all women), but I plead it was quoted out of context...I was just throwing out the notion that you could vote by bulk, if you were "anti voting," just to have a negative influence, if nothing else.

Certainly not the ideal situation, but trying to point out voting can still serve a purpose...

I should welcome travellers into my perception of Grateful Dead-land. Got to be good looking because it's so hard to see the real trolls.

I'm not so sure myself; I'm just tired of stolen elections.

Stolen elections and fake moon landings...

You so silly!

Obama is half white so it doesn't count and we are still racist.

Sorry I read this one by accident and couldn't resist.

Nice post my friend - I wish more people were like you.

I was at the Floydfest music festival in southwestern VA earlier this year and was approached by young kid (probably early 20s) about signing a petition to put a third party on the Virginia ballot. I politely declined and the little fuck went ballistic on me - called me a sell out and asked if I was "corporate" and in someone's back pocket. WTF??? 15 minutes later he was being escorted from the festival grounds by the VA State Police.

All because I declined to sign his petition. Whatever happened to polite and respectful disagreement and debate?

I agree with you - I could care less who you vote for, as long as you vote for someone and have a somewhat objective reason for doing so - race, gender, age, because someone told me to, his wife dresses nice - all suck as reasons IMO.

I too don't particularly care for those in the entertainment industry who use their visibility as a forum to tell someone HOW to vote. Use your status to encourage someone TO vote. Chances are there is a spectrum of thoughts on various issues even within the crowd they are speaking to. You can tell me to suck eggs - just don't tell me how.

Be well my friend.

I know what you mean! There is no reason to sign that petition, if you do not live in Virginia! Doing so might invalidate that whole page full of names. I don't get the idea of registering to vote at these rock concerts, which attract people from 50 states and beyond. Do it where you live and then vote. Not at a drug party.

These people with the clipboards, don't know who lives in which state. Convicted felons aren't permitted to vote in many states and that does include their drug offenese. I'll bet that more than one stoner registered to vote at a human be in; while these STUPID Republicans talk like ACORN has the monopoly voter registration irregularities...
